Spring is coming! I've seen blogs with flowers and green grass, but here on the high plains our grass is as brown as, well, dead grass. But our Spring birds are coming back, and they are so welcome. The first to arrive were the Horned Larks. They showed up about two weeks ago, a little flock of six birds, running down the driveway like shore birds, and swooping in front of the car like swallows. Their little "horns" are feather tufts.
of course this is not my photo -
I can barely photograph the broad side of our barn
Yesterday two Mountain Bluebirds greeted us at the barn, perched on the fence posts. Sure, their color is amazing, but that's just part of their appeal. They are cheeky, cheerful little guys with little fear of humans. They seem to say "Hey, whatcha doing?" as we go about our chores.
again, not my photo

Wow, the blue bird is the prettiest thing I've ever seen...beautiful! xxxxxx
Absolutely gorgeous birds--so pretty :)
I don't believe I've ever seen the horned lark. What a striking bird!
I haven't seen the bluebirds, but our red winged blackbirds are back, in masses!
I've also heard some cheerful bird noises as I've worked around the barn. I failed Audubon Camp - I can barely tell one bird from another if I see it. And forget trying to remember their songs - except for a few distinctive ones.
If you say so! I am still waiting for this snow to totally disappear. The birds are both beauties.
That Horned Lark is quite a striking bird! I have never seen any, of course, here I am, in TN.
That's a beautiful bluebird, much different from the ones around here. Never saw one of those either. Thanks!
We are starting to green up finally here! Whew I am ready!
I have not seen a Horned Lark before. What a neat looking bird! I don't guess they live here in East Texas. Bluebirds we do have. :O). I am always amazed at just how blue they are.
That bluebird pic is just amazing. I love blue so much. The horned Lark gorgeous as well. Yeah SPRING!
What pretty birds. In Michigan, a sure sign that Spring is around the corner are Robin Redbreasts...actually, you're supposed to make a wish on the first one you see each season. The birds in your post are gorgeous, though..I've never seen any like them!
What a pleasure it must be to see those beautiful birds. Neither one visits here. I'm glad you're seeing those signs of Spring!
What an amazing colour blue -didn`t think it possible -it looks like its been dyed ! Beautiful day here too- spring is definitely in the air !
I love when the birds start coming back! Spring is on its way... finally!!
What a great way to bring in spring....these birds are wonderful to see! Only 18 more days to go.....officially anyway!
I'll beleive spring is here when I see it! Nice images.
Beautiful birds-I love horned larks! You are months ahead of us up here in the mountains...I'm jealous!
Hello deary!
Wow...that horned Lark is the coolest bird, and the Mountain blue..they would make me want to take up photography, if I already didn't practice it!
Your"can't photograph the broad side of a barn", made me giggle.
