Wildfire

Suzanne, Jan and I got together for lunch today.  We're 3 old friends who've ridden and giggled together for 20 years.  What a fun lunch it was.  Of course the talk turned to horses and barns, and I suggested we show Suzanne the barn where Jan boarded Elvis and Lakota.  We had moved them to Jan's Friday, but hey, it was a good excuse to enjoy each other's company for a bit longer.  So off we went to the show barn.  Imagine our surprise when we found that they were in the process of evacuating horses because of a wildfire.  The pretty view I posted a week ago looks like this today -

No structures have burned, but 8,500 homes have been evacuated.  There are a lot of big barns in the area, and the horses have been evacuated to the fairgrounds.  The fire is over 10 miles from our ranch, but we can see and smell the smoke.  We don't expect to be evacuated, but our trailer is hitched.  The tv news reports that they are making good progress containing the fire.  We've had a mild and dry winter, and the prairie is as dry as dust.  Today we had 45 mph winds.  We are all worried about the summer, and hoping for some snow.

Hi there. I don't know if you saw my earlier comment, but our Parker house is safe. Thanks for thinking of me. I was so relieved to hear that you are OK, too. On our drive home we had to go by some of the burned area just south of the horse park. It looks like some of their cross country course was burned. The clouds of smoke were 'awe'-ful.
If you or someone you know needs to evacuate horses we have our Parker pasture with water (no shelter) or we have access to paddocks, a few stalls and pasture down near Black Forest.

I wish I could have sent you some rain, we had too much. I hope that they stop the fire before it eats up too much. Glad you are ready to go if you have to.

Dreaming, thanks so much. We've offered too. Thank goodness it seems like things are settling down. They've just let folks east of Flintwood back home, which includes our friends and horses at Stellar. We still have a friend at the corner of Flintwood and Bayou Gulch that we're concerned for.

Oh my! Terry, how terribly scary! That photo, the local paper would love that.
Its amazing, you had so much snow before, but now its dry enough for that. I don't recall if you said..what was the original cause?

Glad that no loss of life has occurred, and I know the fairground s are full of horses. Too bad for homes stables lost though...life is worth more, and even those that have lost material-can attest to that.

Hope it rains or snows! And, pray you can remain.

Oh my...I've been wondering if you were near the fire! We have a fire about 10 miles from us, too, but luckily we had a small blizzard today so the ground and trees are wetter than they were.

I'm very nervous about the upcoming fire season.

Hoping everyone stays safe down that way!

Terry...happy to read that things are starting to settle down. Fire's are so unpredictable. I'm grateful we have not had them around here.

That has to be a scary thing! Fires are so unpredictable, and evacuating with horses can be a real challenge. I'm so glad to hear that things have settled down. Stay safe.

That's terrible and I hope you will continue to be safe. It gets even scarier when you have to evacuate large animals, like the horses. And it is so early in the year for fires. It is snowing here and I wish I could send some your way. Maybe these storms we have here will move east. Take care and all the best to you and yours.--Inger

That is so scary! I will keep sending good (and rainy) thoughts your way. I am hoping that they get the fire under control soon. As a side note...you must live very close to my brother.

That is sure scary! Its so dry here already as well. Ban burns are already going into affect in several parts of Texas. We could really use some rain.

Will make for a hard gardening year if this keeps up and yes make for easy fires!

Oh Terry, so sorry to hear about the wildfires. We endured wildfires in 2007 near our home and almost had to be evacuated, so understand the trepidation and worry.
