The Mouse Highway

So here's what happened.  Remember when we were in the deep freeze last week?  We'd go down to the barn at 7am and flush a jackrabbit from up next to the barn.  The poor thing was after scraps of hay.  It was -17F degrees, and of course I felt sorry for the jackrabbit.

So anyway, I got the bright idea of leaving him some food.  And since we live in country where there are more coyotes than humans, I thought I'd leave some cracked corn up closer to the house.  I'd seen his footprints under the birdfeeder, so that seemed like a good place.

I found a snow-free spot beside a boulder and left the corn.  Here's what happened -
1 deer mouse print,
multiple deer mice prints,
a deer mouse highway!

I'm sorry, Jax, but you are going to have to fend for yourself.  True, deer mice are much prettier than house mice, but still, we won't be doing that again!

The good news for all creatures is that we are having a heat wave this week.  We might get to 60F tomorrow.

You're adorable. :)

It's like the first one bragged about it on DeerMouseFaceBook and all the rest clicked "like" and came running over!

I love the photo of your home on the snow-swept plains. Absolutely gorgeous out there in the wilderness! Super cool about feeding the deer mice (well, they definitely ARE cute) ... and sad that the jackrabbit had to miss out on the special treat meant for him.

* lol at Funder's comment, too *

Love the sequence of the photos, looks like a mini-herd of them went through there! That is really cute!

Mice are sweet as long as they don't leave highways of droppings. I like how you built this story up and up and up.

Great shots...and a sign of caring.

That was a great sequence of shots. I wonder just how many deer mice hang around your place. Quite a few, I would imagine, with the grain and hay that you feed your horses. Probably best that poor Mr. Jack Rabbit fend for himself.

Jax'll figure it out. I wish my boss would decide to let the squirrels do the same -_-

Mice are a nuisance and with putting in kind of tidbits out for critters there is always the possibility of getting the unwanted...that's what happened to us this week...lots of birdseed for the enormous amount of birds and then...from out of nowhere...Mr. Rat! Sorry birds...no more seeds for awhile until His Highness is taken care of!

Nice work, P.I.Terry! can handle mice but when it comes to the bigger guys, as mentioned above, then it comes time for the critters to fend for themselves. There is plenty available from the neighbours.

Your Jack Rabbit looks like a Hare to me.....thats what we call then in Uk....I think it might be what I know as a Hare..they have much longer ears than our usual rabbits.....poor him....looks like the Deer Mice have had a banquet !!......live and let live thats what I say....especially in sub zero temperatures..we all need a heloing hand sometimes.......Jayne
