The Down Side of Summer

Record heat and high winds put us smack into fire season.  There are three main fires burning in Colorado, and we can see smoke from two of them.

About 2:00 today, neighbor Kate called and said "Look South".  There was a plume of smoke.  By 5, it looked like this -

As I stood there, camera in hand, I could see the fire find more fuel.

The fire is called the Black Forest Fire.
It's about 40 miles from us.
Correction:  it's about 40 miles driving, but 20 miles straight line
We aren't in danger, but we are hitched just in case.

It's unnerving to see our ranch like this -

My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes.

I did wonder if this could be close to you. It looks much closer than 40 miles away, doesn't it.
Praying for those who have suffered losses.

I just cannot even fathom what that feels like. Stay safe!

Wow, it looks much closer than 40 miles away. I hope y'all manage to stay out of harm's way.

Wildfire season is terrifying. A couple summers ago it was very bad here, and we were hitched and ready to load at a moment's notice. We even had instructions for the neighbors and on our gate about what to do if we weren't home and a fire was nearby. Scary, scary stuff.

I can't find the words to describe how awful this is. I have so many friends who have been impacted by it. For now, our former neighborhood is safe - but being only about 2 miles from the fire is a bit unnerving!

I'm going to ditto what everyone else said.

Been worrying about all my blog friends down south. Be careful.

I saw Dreaming just rescued some horses from that fire. I'm glad you are safe and stay indoors because that smoke will hurt you. I couldn't go outside here one day when the recent fire north of Los Angeles was within 40 miles of our house and the winds blew in our direction. And you have some huge smoke clouds there. I hope it's getting under control by now.

Glad to know you're safe...and that you apparently have a plan if things get dangerous. That's really scary.

Not much time this year between the end of the rain and the start of the fires. CS is not the place to be. The fire at the Royal Gorge has me scared. They had three of the sacred white buffalo there.

Stay safe.

That must be terrifying! We occasionally have fires on the moor here in high summer (whatever that is....it's a distant memory....) and you realise the power of nature. Glad you're safe!

Oh my! This must be very unsettling Terry! I can see why too. The good thing is that there are not many trees around you, right?

I know the feeling all too well, Terry...we endured a forest fire near our home in 2008. The awful feeling in the pit of our stomachs. Please take care and gods speed!

Hi Terry! You have been very much on my mind these past couple of days, but so much has been going on here that I didn't have a chance to contact you. I am glad you are hitched, because I have been thinking of Boomer and friends too. I am heartsick about what is going on. I would be devastated to lose loved ones, critters, or my home. If you do have to evacuate and you need someplace to go, you are welcome here. Or even if you just needed me to look after a small four-legged creature I would be happy to. I suppose I could stash Boomer under the deck as long as he didn't mind the odd stray golf ball from the links. Not Reggie though ~ he seems like a pistol. Just know I'm thinking of you and David, et. al, and I am hoping that fire stays well away from you. Take care.

Wow! I came to visit your ranch and found ... a fire! It looks big and threatening and I imagine quite scary. Are you and your neighbours all-right?

These photos are very scary.

PS: Just great that you was a cartographer. I think it is an interesting and fascinating career.
